Delphinium Sweet Sensation
No ordinary delphiniums, these rosette type double delphiniums form a beautiful stem of ‘pom-pom’ flowers on robust stalks from November/December onwards in the garden. Delphinium ‘Sweet Sensation’ Light’ is a clear intense mauve edged with a touch of blue. These Delphiniums may produce two flower flushes per year in New Zealand once mature, flowering again later in the summer. Deciduous, they die down over the winter to re-emerge bigger and stronger than ever in the spring.
Bred in Scotland they are not afraid of the cold and will thrive even in the coldest of Southern regions to -20°c right through to the warm and humid temperatures of the North.
Cut them for indoors or simply enjoy the ‘wow’s of friends envious of your rare and special collector’s plant. Divide clumps with care once flowering has ceased in the Autumn. Prefer Rich, Porous and non-acidic soil conditions and prefer to be cooler in summer so if in a hotter region select a site with afternoon shade. Delphiniums like an application of slow release fertilizer after flowering to encourage re-blooming as they are gross feeders. Stake blooms and remove spent flower stalks. Water sparingly over drier summer months and mulch to keep root zone cool. Avoid over watering and ensure a well drained soil.
